Boating

Spring is the dawn of the fishing season for most serious fishermen.  Although it may be the rainy season, a seasoned fisherman knows that rain brings most fish out of the deep depths towards the nutrients found in the natural rain water.  Thus, those excited about getting out the boat or yacht should take the time to review the five basic items that one needs before going boating.  As exciting as it may be to hit the open waters, it is vital to make sure that all necessary supplies are in place before heading out onto any boats for the most success. Fume alerts Most people do not worry about fires while aboard a yacht or boat since water is everywhere the eye can see.  However, it is possible for a fire to occur from under a boat engine or the lower level of a yacht and without proper warning you could be stranded on the sea. Thus, when boating you should always make sure that your boat is equipped with fume alerts.  Additionally, fume alerts will also notify you of potential carbon monoxide poisoning below the deck of a yacht which is also a deadly position to find yourself in while boating.

EPIRIB
While you may be skilled at smoke signals, in times of real eminent distress you will want to be prepared with an emergency position indicating radio beacon.  Unlike any other radio system the EPIRIB is especially made for boating and issues a unique signal for help for added security to you and your passengers while boating.

Life preservers/jackets
Whenever you head out on a boat or yacht your most likely do not anticipate problems, but you can never predict the future.  What you can do is prepare for the worst case scenario with plenty of life preservers and jackets so that if you must abandon ship or if your yacht overturns you can stay afloat while waiting for aid to arrive.

VHF Radio
If you run into trouble while boating you do not want to find your channel disabled or undergoing a temporary blackout when you attempt to radio for aid.  A VHF radio allows you do call for aid from other boats in the area and the local coast guard making it an invaluable device.

Navigation Device
Despite the years you may have captained a boat or yacht it is still possible to get turned around while out boating.  In the case that you find yourself lost out on the sea a GPS system or a compass can quickly get your boat back in line and reassure you that you are headed back for mainland.
